A number of research studies investigating melon production technologies in various macroregions of Poland characterized by different climate conditions have been initiated to investigate the effect of perforated PE film and non-woven PP fabric covers as well as soil mulching with organic and mineral material on the melon growing process. A two-factorial field experiment was conducted in the years 2004–2008, in the Garden of the Research and Experimental Station of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The first experimental factor were four Polish melon cultivars, Malaga F1, Melba, Oliwin and Seledyn F1, recommended for open ground and forced cultivation. The second factor were types of soil cover and plant cover. Apart from the control treatment (without protective cover), the effect of the following types of cover on the growth rate and yield of melon plants was determined in a five-year cycle: perforated PE film with 100 holes per m2, non-woven PP fabric with surface density of 17 g·m-2, black PE film for soil mulching; black PE film for soil mulching + perforated PE film with 100 holes per m2, black PE film for soil mulching + non-woven PP fabric. An analysis of the chemical composition of melon fruit showed that the concentrations of dry matter, L-ascorbic acid and total carbohydrates were higher in the edible parts of heterotic cultivars. The type of plant cover and soil cover had a significant effect on the dry matter content of the edible parts of melon, but it caused no considerable changes in the levels of the remaining organic compounds. In the majority of cases, the nitrate content of melon fruit was below the allowable standards. The lowest quantities of nitrates were accumulated by melon fruit of cv. Oliwin in the control treatment.

Mineral content of melon fruit (Cucumis melo L.)

100%
Melons are highly demanding, thermophilous plants, which is why they are unpopular among fruit growers. Melon cultivation requires special treatment methods for the improvement of microclimatic conditions. Seven Polish melon cultivars are presently grown on the domestic market. They are well adapted to the local climate. The growth rate, vigor, fruit shape, fruit size, rind color and flesh thickness of those cultivars vary. The objective of this study was to determine the mineral content of edible parts of four field-grown melon cultivars in the Warmia region (NE Poland). This study discusses the mineral content of melon fruit subject to the investigated cultivar and cultivation method. In Poland, melon production is difficult and unreliable. The main problem is the selection of an appropriate cultivar and cultivation method. The analyzed material consisted of four Polish melon cultivars: Malaga F1, Melba, Oliwin, Seledyn F1, grown in a field experiment without protective cover, under polyethylene (PE) sheet cover, under non-woven polypropylene (PP) cover, with soil mulching, as well as with soil mulching under PE sheet cover or nonwoven PP cover. The highest concentrations of total N, K, Ca and Cu were determined in melon fruit of cv. Oliwin. Significant variations in total nitrogen and phosphorus levels in the edible parts of melon plants were noted subject to the applied cultivation method. Cucumis melo L. grown in the control treatment without protective cover was marked by significantly higher levels of total nitrogen and phosphorus in the fruit, compared with fruit grown with the use of other cultivation methods. The results of this study indicate that the fruit of melon plants cv. Seledyn grown in mulched soil under non-woven PP cover was characterized by the most favorable Ca:Mg and Ca:P ratios in comparison with fruit from the remaining treatments.
Eggplants, known for their exceptional taste, are low in calories and constitute a rich source of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, copper and aluminum. They require a long and warm growing season, since adverse environmental conditions lead to growth inhibition, blossom fall and fruit drop. The application of eco-friendly biostimulators, such as Asahi SL, contributes to improving the growth and development of eggplants through increasing their stress tolerance and environmental adaptability, thus resulting in a higher yield. A two-factorial experiment in a split-plot design with three replications was conducted in 2010-2011. The leaves of two eggplant cultivars, Black Beauty and Violetta Lunga, were sprayed with a 0.1% solution of Asahi SL. Seedlings were grown in a heated greenhouse, in line with the generally observed standards for eggplant cultivation. Eight-week-old seedlings were planted in the ground, at 50x60 cm spacing, in an unheated plastic tunnel. Starting from 30 May, at 10-day-intervals, eggplants were sprayed three times with the biostimulator Asahi SL at a concentration of 0.1%. Plants sprayed with water served as control. The fruits were harvested at the stage of commercial maturity, when normal sized and colored but still unripe. The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of macronutrients and micronutrients in fruits of two eggplant cultivars, grown in an unheated plastic tunnel and sprayed with the biostimulator Asahi SL. The mineral content of eggplants was determined in mid-August, on an average sample of marketable fruit yield collected in each treatment. The application of Asahi SL led to a significant decrease in total nitrogen levels in the fruits of cv. Black Beauty, and a significant increase in potassium concentrations in the fruits of both eggplant cultivars. The biostimulator increased Cu accumulation in fruits of both cultivars, and it significantly decreased Fe accumulation in cv. Violetta Lunga in comparison with the control treatment. The fruits of cv. Violetta Lunga harvested from control plants were characterized by normal Ca:Mg and Ca:P ratios. The broadest K:Mg ratio was noted in cv. Violetta Lunga in both treatments. The K:(Mg+Ca) ratio was higher in the fruits from control plants of cv. Black Beauty.
W porównaniu do pozostałych wariantów uprawy, najpóźniej rozpoczynały owocowanie rośliny ogórka uprawiane w obiekcie z zastosowaniem ochrony roślin warzywnych zgodnie z programem. W obiekcie tym uzyskano największy średni plon ogółem i handlowy owoców. Spośród preparatów proekologicznych użytych do ochrony roślin ogórka najkorzystniejszy wpływ na potencjał plonotwórczy roślin miał Biosept 33 SL oraz wyciąg z ziela skrzypu polnego. Najmniejszy plon uzyskano uprawiając ogórka w obiekcie kontrolnym (bez ochrony).
Non-chemical methods of agrophage control have gained increasing popularity recently, and particular attention has been paid to enhancing biodiversity in agrocenoses. Intercropping, i.e. growing of two or more crops (onions, carrots, dill, beans, Lacy phacelia, mustard) simultaneously in the same field, reduces pest infestations. The rationale behind intercropping is that different crops planted together act as attractants for beneficial insects (hoverflies, ladybirds) and effectively disorientate the pests (aphids, carrot flies) which are then unable to find host plants. This study was conducted in the Experimental Garden of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, in the growing seasons of 2009–2010. The experiment was established on brown soil of quality class IV b, and ridges were prepared in line with the generally observed standards of organic farming. The first experimental factor were six carrot cultivars differing with respect to the growth and development period: ‘Deep Purple F1’, ‘Florida F1’, ‘Interceptor F1’, ‘Joba’, ‘Kazan F1’ and ‘Purple Haze F1’. The second experimental factor were three methods of carrot fly biocontrol, compared in the following treatments: control – unprotected plants, the application of the biocontrol agent Bioczos BR containing paraffin-coated garlic pulp (10 g cubes), carrots intercropped with dill cv. ‘Szmaragd’ and carrots intercropped with Welsh onions cv. ‘Parade’. Carrot-dill and carrot-Welsh onion intercropping effectively reduced damage to carrot roots caused by carrot fly larvae. The applied biological control methods had a significant effect on carrot yield. The application of Bioczos BR and carrot-Welsh onion intercropping had a beneficial influence on the total and marketable yield of carrot storage roots. Carrot-dill intercropping resulted in a significant yield decrease. The content of dry matter, total sugars and L-ascorbic acid in carrot roots was affected by the cultivar and the cultivar × biocontrol method interaction. Higher concentrations of dry matter and L-ascorbic acid were noted in carrot cultivars with purple-colored roots, ‘Deep Purple F1’ and ‘Purple Haze F1’. The average nitrate content of carrot storage roots did not exceed the maximum permissible levels set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Health.
The aim of an experiment conducted in 2006–2008 was to determine the effect of soil fertilization with Crop Care on the yield and chemical composition of carrot cultivars with orange- and purple-colored storage roots. The yield and chemical composition of three carrot cultivars: ‘Florida F1’ with orange-colored roots, ‘Deep Purple F1‘ with purple-colored roots and ‘Purple Haze F1‘ with roots that have a purple cortex and an orange core were compared in this study. Plants were grown in control soil with sufficient quantities of nutrients to support the development of carrot roots as well as in soil additionally fertilized with Crop Care. The results of the study showed that carrots of cv. ‘Florida F1’ produced a much higher total yield and marketable yield than carrots of cv. ‘Deep Purple F1’ and ‘Purple Haze F1’. Additional fertilization significantly increased the marketable yield of the carrots. The edible parts of purple root cultivars were characterized by a higher content of dry matter, L-ascorbic acid and total carbohydrates. The application of the Crop Care fertilizer significantly increased the dry matter content of carrots. Roots of cv. ‘Deep Purple F1’ contained the highest levels of N, K and Mg, while cv. Florida F1 was most abundant in Ca and Na.
Welsh onions are characterized by a relatively high storage potential, high nutritional value and mild flavor, which contribute to their growing popularity among consumers. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Polimag S fertilizer applied at two doses on the macronutrient content of edible parts of three Welsh onion cultivars. A two-factorial field experiment was performed in a randomized block design with three replications. It was set up in the Experimental Garden of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and conduccted in 2010-2011. The experimental factors were: (1) Welsh onion cultivars Long White Ishikura, Parade and Performer, grown from seedlings for bunch harvest, and (2) the application of mixed fertilizer, Polimag S, at two doses of 0.072 kg m-2 and 0.144 kg m-2. The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse, where each year seeds were sown in boxes (50 cm x 30 cm), between 14 and 20 March, to grow seedlings. At the two- or three-leaf stage, they were planted out in a field between 17 and 26 April. Forty-two seedlings were planted on a plot, at the 20 cm x 30 cm spacing. Polimag S, applied as a supplemental fertilizer at two different doses, was mixed with soil immediately before the transplanting of seedlings. A single harvest was carried out manually. Marketable yield consisted of healthy Welsh onion plants, with thickened leaf-bases of more than 1 cm in diameter, free from diseases, pests and mechanical damage. The chemical composition of Welsh onion plants was evaluated immediately after harvest. The concentrations of macronutrients (total N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S) were determined in edible parts of Welsh onion plants. Statistical analysis revealed no significant effect of a cultivar on the macronutrient content of whole Welsh onion plants, scapes and leaves. Leaves were characterized by the highest macronutrient concentrations. Polimag S at a 50% dose contributed to a significant increase in the total nitrogen and phosphorus content of whole plants. Wide Ca:Mg, Ca:P, K:Mg and K:(Mg+Ca) ratios were noted in whole Welsh onion plants.
The presented results concern three varieties of red cabbage: Koda, Kissendrup SWE and Haco POL. During a field experiment conducted in 2003-05, the three varieties were analyzed for their organic and mineral content which is responsible for the nutritive value of cabbage. Significant differences were found between the studied varieties. The reported changes accounted for organic and mineral nutrients. The best results were reported in respect of var. Haco POL, whose edible parts were the richest in dry matter, vitamin C, sugars and organic acids. Haco POL was also characterized by the highest copper content and the lowest iron content among the analyzed varieties.
