The paper presents results of the studies conducted to determine causes and directions of transformations in vegetation of meadow-pasture communities in the area of the Wielki Łęg Obrzański [Great Obra Floodmeadows]. Multifaceted natural and habitat analyses were conducted on over 1800 relevés prepared in the vegetation seasons of 2005–2009 according to Braun-Blanquet. On their basis the phytosociological and floristic structure was analysed and habitat conditions were determined by phytoindication. Moreover, laboratory methods were applied in soil analyses to determine contents of basic macro- and microelements and groundwater table levels were recorded. Results referred to the documentation and archive literature made it possible to determine causes of transformations in plant communities in that area and outline probable directions in which succession was progressing. A lack of regular land use patterns is seen as the primary cause for the transformation in the flora of the Wielki Łęg Obrzański, particularly in the last 20 years. A considerable limitation of land use in certain sections of this area has led to the initiation of dominance of nitrophilic species such as Urtica dioica, Cirsium arvense, Potentilla anserina or Galium mollugo, while in the thinned sward it led to the development of grass species with very limited economic importance. Another equally important factor affecting the structure of vegetation cover is connected with air and water relations in soils, determined by the drainage system operating there for the last 200 years and by precipitation.
In years 1969 and 1980-91 geobotanical research was carried out on the area of 200 ha of permanent grasslands situated in the Gopło-Warta Canal depression in the zone of the strongest contamination with industrial gases from the neighbouring aluminium works. The total of 150 phytosociological records were taken with the use of the Braun-Blanquet method. Furthemore, chemical soil and plant analyses as well as the examination of the site were conducted. Meadow plants showed varying concentrations of fluorine ranging from 0.65 to 85.2 mg %, and 95 % of the plant samples were toxic to farm animals. The examined meadows are situated primarily on semihydrogenic and podzolic gley soils. However, there are also places where bog and black soils occur. Soils were mainly acid and slightly acid. Chemical analysis showed that the soils are poor in potassium and phosphorus. During the period of studies unfavourable changes occured in the physico-chemical properties of the site: both soil moisture content and density increased while its oxygenation and porosity declined. Soil reaction was also found to have increased. Economically useful plant communities which used to occupy 37.5 % of the area were reduced considerably and now occupy only 12 % (Arrhenatheretum elatioris and Lolio-Cynosuretum). They were replaced by low value plant communities (Deschampsia caespitosa, Carex fusca, Carex gracilis, Molinia coerulea) which currently occupy 88 % of the area. Furthermore, considerable amounts of meadow weeds and plant semiparasites were also found in the examined meadow swards. The quantities of fluorine in plants showed a declining tendency which may have been due to a decrease in the discharge of fluorine into the atmosphere observed recently. Thus, it can be said that fluorine causes injury to plants and leads to the replacement of more valuable species by species economically less valuable. Moreover, these unfavourable changes are further reinforced by negative site changes caused by incorrect management practices quite common on these contaminated areas.
One of the habitat types protected within the framework of the NATURA 2000 network due to the presence of species of European importance are fresh meadows from the Arrhenatherion alliance. The maintenance of their characteristic floristic composition depends on habitat conditions and extensive use, while any changes in this respect trigger succession transformations potentially threatening their nature value. The aim of the study was to conduct nature and habitat valuation of one of the largest meadow complexes in the Wielkopolska region, i.e. Wielki Łęg Obrzański, which will make it possible to describe the preservation status of fresh meadows and their habitats. Based on multifaceted analyses of 535 relevés made using the Braun-Blanquet method in the years 2006–2012 and representing the Arrhenatherion alliance, the phytosociological and botanical structure as well as constancy of species in individual variants (floristic types) were determined. Moreover, their habitat conditions were defined, i.e. soil moisture and nitrogen content using the index method according to Ellenberg, while laboratory methods were used to determine the content of organic matter, soil moisture as well as the contents of potassium, magnesium and phosphorus in soil. Floristic composition of fresh meadows from the Arrhenatherion alliance differs due to high heterogeneity of habitat. The presence of fresh meadow phytocenoses both on dried organic soils (the driest forms of flood meadows) and on mineral soils (oak-hornbeam forests) contributes to differences in the floristic composition both in ryegrass meadows and grass–fescue meadows, mainly due to soil moisture and fertility as well as sward use type. This constituted the basis for the identification of lower syntaxonomic units in the internal structure of the plant associations. Five variants were distinguished in Arrhenatheretum elatioris, while the community of Poa pratensis–Festuca rubra was developed in as many as 8 variants.
Studies were conducted in years 1986-92 in RZD Brody and state farm Sobota, Poznań voivodeship, as well as on meadows of Zielona Góra voivodeship. Three different harvest technologies were applied in the investigations. Floristic composition of the meadow sward was determined with the help of the Levy and Coc’s method. Moreover, sward changes as well as turf and plant damages caused by the application of different harvest technologies were ascertained. A can auger of 397.93 cm³ capacity was used to determine root weight. Chemical analysis of the sward and dominants was carried out with the aim of determining the content of basic macro- (N, P, K, Ca, Na, Mg) and micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe) as well as organic compounds (crude protein, water soluble sugars, crude fibre, carotene, crude ash). Site investigations comprised the soil, level of ground water, climatic factors as well as the number of meadow compactions by machines. The studies revealed significant floristic differences in the result of physico-chemical changes of the soil caused by compaction during harvest technologies. Negative differences are bigger (100 %) on organic soils than on mineral soils (50 %), and floristic changes depend, to a large extent, on the increased number of technological operations causing a higher degree of compaction and reduced soil porosity and fertility.
