This model optimizes port hinterland intermodal refrigerated container flows , considering both cost and quality degradation, which is distinctive from the previous literature content in a way that it quantifies the influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in different setting temperature on intermodal network planning. The primary contribution of this paper is that the model is beneficial not only to shippers and customers for the novel service design, but also offer , for policy-makers of the government, insights to develop inland transport infrastructures in consideration of intermodal transportation. The majority of models of multimodal system have been established with an objective of cost minimization for normal commodities. As the food quality is possible to be influenced by varying duration time required for the storage and transportation, and transportation accompanied with refrigeration producing more CO2 emission, this paper aims to address cost minimization and quality degradation minimization within the constraint of CO2 footprint. To achieve this aim, we put the quality degradation model in a mixed-integer linear programming model used for intermodal network planning for cold chain. The example of Dalian Port and Yingkou Port offer insight into trade-offs between transportation temperature and transport mode considering CO2 footprint. Furthermore, the model can offer a useful reference for other regions with the demand for different imported food, which requires an uninterrupted cold chain during the transportation and storage
Phytoremediation is a promising, low-cost and environmentally friendly technology. By simulating different concentrations of Pb, Pb+Zn and Pb+EDTA in aqueous solutions, taking Acorus calamus, Eichhornia crassipes and Iris tectorum as experimental material, hydroponics was used to study the enrichment of aquatic plants to Pb in water under different conditions. The results show that Eichhornia crassipes has the best bioconcentration capacity, Acorus calamus has good bioconcentration and Iris tectorum has weak bioconcentration. The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) are more than 1 and the BCFs of the underground parts are greater than that of the aboveground parts. However, the translocation factors (TFs) are less than 1. The presence of Zn enhances the enrichment of the aquatic plants to Pb. The presence of EDTA reduces the enrichment, but promotes the transfer of Pb from underground parts to aboveground parts. All of the conclusions can provide reference for the application of aquatic plants for Phytoremediation of Pb.
The objective of this present investigation was to study the different response on drought tolerance and post-drought recovery for two different genotypes of white clover (a drought-tolerant small-leafed white clover and a drought-sensitive large-leafed white clover) associating with antioxidative enzyme and lignin metabolism. Two materials were exposed to 12 days of drought stress and 6 days of rewatering in a greenhouse. Significantly higher activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, guaiacol peroxidase and root activity as well as lower electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde levels of the small-leafed in leaves and roots were observed as compared to the large-leafed under drought stress and rewatering. Lignification-related enzymes (polyphenol oxidase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase) activities of two materials in leaves gradually increased from 0 to 9 days of drought stress; then declined at 12 days of drought stress and after rewatering. After 12 days of drought stress, lignin content of two materials in roots was significantly higher relative to the well-watered. Lignin content of leaves in the small-leafed also increased significantly after 6 days of rewatering, but not in the large-leafed. The small-leafed exhibited more sensitive lignin metabolism and faster lignification in leaves and roots than the large-leafed regarding the response of drought stress. These results indicated that antioxidant efficiency and lignin metabolism played important roles in response to drought stress and rewatering for different white clovers. Comparatively higher reactive oxygen species scavenging system and more sensitive lignin metabolism could be associated with better drought tolerance and post-drought recovery in white clover.
Since the space points’ average concentrations of PM obtained by air quality automatic monitoring sites were less representative of PM pollution levels in the Beijing area, it was necessary to improve the spatial resolution of PM concentrations on the basis of continuous time series. In order to solve the problem, we used one-hour average concentrations of PM from March 2013 to February 2014 obtained by monitoring sites. Firstly, concentration variations with time scale of PM2.5 and PM10 were researched to find out their correlations and pollution grades in continuous time series. Secondly, in order to realize the spatial distribution characteristics from points to surfaces, MATLAB spatial interpolation tools were used to predict the average concentrations of PM on any latitude-longitude grid in regional surface, then spatial interpolation on longitudes and latitudes, and the PM concentrations were researched by radial basis functions based on biharmonic green function. Finally, by constructing decision functions and sample sets, the interpolation results were tested by k-fold cross validation to analyze the error distribution between monitoring values and fitted values, and then they were compared with Kriging interpolation results realized by DACE tool in MATLAB. The results showed there were periodical variations and significant correlations on the average concentrations of PM from March 2013 to February 2014 in Beijing. The PM pollutions also had obvious regional characteristics. Interpolation results of radial basis function interpolation on PM concentrations could represent their spatial distribution in Beijing, since the method had a certain precision to improve utilization of spatial information. Moreover, the analysis showed that the main factors of PM pollution were dust storms and strong winds in spring and autumn, rainfall and the warm wet climate in summer, and cold fronts and snowfall in winter. Pollution characteristics in the Beijing area were higher in the south and lower in the north, and the pollution sources might be regional transport as well as local anthropogenic sources. The conjoint analysis on time series and spatial interpolation of concentrations had significance for further research of time-space relationship of PM, and it also provided a method for understanding regional pollution characteristics.
Edge to interior gradients in forest ecosystems can influence the species composition and community structure as a result of variations in micro-environment. In this study, the edge effects on stand productivity and plant species diversity were investigated in two adjacent types of forests in central-southern China: Chinese fir adjacent with pine forests and Chinese fir adjacent with broad-leaved forests. A total of 48 sample plots for overstory and 240 sample quadrates for understory in different stand ages were set up. The tree growth parameters were measured in the overstory while the plant species diversity was measured in both overstory and understory of the examined forests. The results showed that DBH (tree diameter at the breast height), tree height and stand volume in overstory increased from the central areas (CA) of forests to the edge areas (EA), and the plant species richness and diversity in understory were greater in EA than in CA. The edge effect was greater in Chinese fir paired with broad-leaved forests than in Chinese fir paired with pine forests. The edge effect decreased in an order as young aged stands > middle aged stands > mature aged stands in the studied forests. The changes in tree growth and species diversity in the edge area compared to the interior were mainly attributed to the alteration of micro-environmental factors such as light density, temperature and moisture. Our results suggest increasing forest productivity and plant species diversity could be achieved by making more edges in the forests.
Prompt and accurate diagnosis is necessary to start adequate treatment for different affecting species including P. falciparum and P. vivax. Here we described the Wondfo Rapid diagnostic Kit (Pf-HRP2/PAN-pLDH) for the detection of P. falciparum and pan-plasmodium in patient specimen by using a nano-gold immunochromatographic assay. Our rapid assay adapted nano-gold labeling techniques and the monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against both histidine rich protein-2 (Pf HRP-2) of P. falciparum and pan plasmodium-specific pLDH (pan pLDH). The established two-antibody sandwich immunochromatographic assay could detect P. falciparum and pan-plasmodium. The sensitivity and specificity of Wondfo rapid diagnostic kit were determined by comparing with the “gold standard” of microscopic examination of blood smears. In this study1023 blood samples were collected from outpatient clinics in China and Burma, and detected by both Wondfo kit and microscopic examination. The detection sensitivity and specificity of Wondfo rapid diagnostic kit were 96.46% and 99.67% for P. falciparum (HRP2), 95.03% and 99.24% for pLDH, 96.83% and 99.74% for non-falciparum species, 96.70% and 99.74% for P. vivax, respectively. These results indicate that Wondfo rapid diagnostic assay may be useful for detecting P. falciparum and non-P. falciparum (especially P.v.) in patient specimen.
In situ stabilization of cadmium (Cd) in soil by the addition of Fe-rich amendments (e.g., red mud or RM) has been suggested as an effective and low-cost method. A combined soil-sand pot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of the addition of RM on iron plaque formation and Cd accumulation in rice plants. Two experiments were conducted: 1. A hydroponic trial with 20 cultivars for screening the rice cultivars with different radial oxygen loss (ROL). 2. A rhizobag trial using the three selected rice cultivars (Zheyou12, Qianyou 1, Chunjiangnuo 2) with different ROL at 2 and 5 mg Cd kg-1 exposures amended by three rates of RM application (0, 0.5%, 1%). The results indicated that the three rice cultivars with different ROLs on average showed better growth performance, less Cd uptake, and more iron (Fe) plaque on root surface and in the rhizosphere under RM treatments. In addition, the rice cultivar with higher ROL tended to have higher Fe plaque and Cd adsorption on the roots and in their rhizosphere with increasing RM additions. These results suggested that rice plants (especially high ROL-ability cultivars) amended by Fe-rich amendments tend to possess a high ability to increase Fe plaque on root surface and in the rhizosphere, as well as decrease Cd uptake and translocate from root to grain.
Diabetic population were reported more likely to suffer carriage and infection with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) than non-diabetic population. We aim to elucidate the prevalence and characteristics of S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage among diabetic population in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001–2004. Univariate analyses were conducted using Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact probability test or student t test, as appropriate. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression was conducted to assess the association between influencing factors and S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage. 1010 diabetic participants were included in the study. The prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA nasal carriage were 28.32% and 1.09%, respectively. After the logistic regression, ever had a painful sensation or tingling in hands or feet past three months (Odds Ratio [OR] = 0.359, 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.146–0.882) was significant among S. aureus nasal carriage and gender (OR = 3.410, 95% CI, 1.091–10.653) was significant among MRSA nasal carriage. The proportions of staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) A, SEB, SEC, SED, Toxic-shock syndrome toxin-1, and Panton Valentine Leukocidin toxin among S. aureus strains were 18.75%, 3.13%, 12.50%, 15.63%, 28.13%, and 9.38%, respectively. 63.63% of MRSA strains were community-acquired, 27.27% were hospital-acquired, and 9.09% were non-typeable. Diabetic patients might be more likely to carry S. aureus and MRSA in the United States. Improving hand hygiene compliance, reducing antibiotic overuse, screening for carriers, and decolonization are recommended to reduce the spread of S. aureus and MRSA, especially in community.
Objective. To explore the effect of dexamethasone (DEX) on monocyte adhesion function and its underlying mechanism. Methods. The effects of DEX and fasudil on adhesion of cultured U937 monocytes to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) following stimulation with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) were studied; Changes in the Rho-associated coiled-coil protein kinase 1 (ROCK1) protein content and activity were evaluated. Results. DEX and fasudil significantly inhibited U937 cell adhesion rates under PMA stimulation and inhibited ROCK1 activity. Mifepristone (RU-486) and cycloheximide (CHX) did not alter these effects of DEX. Conclusions. DEX interferes with the adhesion function of U937 cells through the inhibition of ROCK1 activity.
