The Seventh Congress of European Malacological Societies – EuroMal2014 – took place on SeptLember 7–11 in Cambridge, UK. The Organising Committee included Jon Ablett, David Aldridge (Chairman), Katrin inse, Richard C. Preece, Tony Walker, and Tom S. White, with support from the members of The Malacological Society of London. The Scientific Committee was composed of 15 scientists. About 120 participants from 24 countries attended the conference, the main representation being from European research centres, but also scientists from Argentina, USA, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Thailand were present.
Plant cytoplasmic tyrosine tRNA was pseudouridylated at three different positions: 35, 39 and 55. These pseudouridines were introduced by three different enzymes - pseudouridine synthases. Variants of the Arabidopsis thaliana pre-tRNATyr were constructed that allow to monitor specifically pseudouridylation at different nucleotide positions. Using such RNAs to assay pseudouridine synthesis we have prepared an extract from Lupinus luteus cv. Ventus seeds containing activities of at least Ψ35 and Ψ55 synthases. This is the first report describing the preparation of the lupin seed extract that specifically modifies plant pre-tRNATyr transcribed by T7 RNA polymerase. U35 is converted to Ψ35 only in an intron-dependent manner, while pseudouridylation of U55 is insensitive to the presence or absence of an intron.
There is eternal discussion on the best surgical method of pancreatoduodenectomy and reconstruction method. Several different methods of pancreatic stump anastomosis exist. The most popular argument taken into account in the discussion is the frequency of early postoperative complications. Relatively fewer papers analyse the late functional outcome of pancreatic surgery and the method of anastomosis employed. Authors presented short series of 12 patients after pancreatic surgery with analysis of pancreatic remnant morphology and function. Pancreatic remnant volume, pancreatic duct distension and stool elastase-1 test were analysed. There was no correlation of pancreatic exo- or endocrine insufficiency with the volume of pancreatic remnant or the kind of surgery or anastomosis performed. (Folia Morphol 2015; 74, 1: 56–60)
The purpose of this study was establishing the basic energetic parameters of amoeba Acanthamoeba castellaniimitochondria respiring with malate and their response to oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Fe2+ions. It appeared that, contrary to a previous report (Trocha LK, Stobienia O (2007) Acta Biochim Polon 54: 797), H2O2-treated mitochondria of A. Castellanii did not display any substantial impairment. No marked changes in cytochrome pathway activity were found, as in the presence of an inhibitor of alternative oxidase no effects were observed on the rates of uncoupled and phosphorylating respiration and on coupling parameters. Only in the absence of the alternative oxidase inhibitor, non-phosphorylating respiration progressively decreased with increasing concentration of H2O2, while the coupling parameters (respiratory control ratio and ADP/O ratio) slightly improved, which may indicate some inactivation of the alternative oxidase. Moreover, our results show no change in membrane potential, Ca2+uptake and accumulation ability, mitochondrial outer membrane integrity and cytochrome crelease for 0.5–25 mM H2O2-treated versuscontrol (H2O2-untreated) mitochondria. These results indicate that short (5 min) incubation of A. Castellanii mitochondria with H2O2 in the presence of Fe2+ does not damage their basic energetics.
