Social stress and diarrhoea are major threats to piglets during weaning. This study compared serum levels of acute phase proteins (APP) during diarrhoea, silent infection, under stress and in healthy weaned piglets from a conventional herd. Diarrhoea and silent infection influenced the APP level to a moderate degree. It was a weak reaction compared with alteration of these indices in cases of respiratory infections and the possible reasons and mechanisms for this are discussed. It is considered that stress events may not only influence neuroendocrine mechanisms, but also the immune system. The study supports this theory as it obtained elevated serum levels of positive (as well as lower) levels of negative APP in piglets subjected to combining stress. All groups were compared and it was found that stress increased APP reaction, but not as dramatically as infection did.
The aim of study was to determine the effectiveness of different treatments of IBD in dogs, with special attention to treatment solely with mesalazine and its combination with intestinal diet in comparison to combined treatment with (amoxycilin, metoclopramide, famotidine) and intestinal diet alone. The research was carried out on 22 dogs of different sex divided in 4 groups. All dogs showed characteristic symptoms of small intestinal disease. In all groups clinical, hematological, biochemical, urine, endoscopic and histopatological examinations were carried out twice (before and after treatment). The most effective treatment of dogs’ IBD was the application of mesalazine in combination with an intestinal diet. Pharmacological treatment supported with intestinal diet improved its effectiveness and excluded disease recidivism. Panendoscopic examination was demonstrated to be a useful method of examination in IBD diagnosis in dogs showing vomiting and small intestinal diarrhea. The collection of tissues with intestinal biopsy and histopathological analysis of samples enabled the credible diagnosis and treatment of dog IBD.
The usefulness of endoscopic examination for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic enteritis in dogs was determined in this study. It was demonstrated, based on a clinical case, that endoscopy is essential for IBD diagnosis in dogs. Endoscopy also helps to estimate the efficiency of the treatment strategy applied. Nonspecific clinical examination results as well as a predominating lack of deviation in laboratory parameters make endoscopy the basic examination technique in mild and moderately advanced forms of chronic enteritis in the dog.
