Dokonano analizy zagrożenia hałasem występującym podczas okrzesywania i przerzynki drewna pilarką spalinową. W badaniach wykorzystane zostały dwa modele pilarek spalinowych Husqvarna: 242 i 257. Pomiary hałasu zostały przeprowadzone podczas pozyskiwania drewna w drzewostanie rębnym sosnowym.
A case is reported of severe eye injury in an 11-year-old boy which occurred during threshing in the parents’ farmyard. A detailed description of surgical treatment, complications and 7-year follow-up is presented. Despite long lasting treatment and new surgical methods used, the eye became blind. On the basis of our experience we can conclude that adequate adult supervision of children is mandatory during work in farmyards, and this is probably the only way to avoid at least a part of severe injuries which cause great social and economic losses.

Purpose: To establish the aetiology and visual outcome after penetrating eye injures in rural environments. Materials and Methods: The records of 182 patients (184 eyes) with penetrating eye injuries treated in the 1 st Eye Hospital, Lublin, Poland, between 1994 and 2002, were reviewed. Twenty eight of the 184 eyes (15.6%) were work-related agriculture penetrating eye injuries. Distribution by age, sex, season variation, cause of injury, place of entrance wound, visual acuity and late complications were estimated. Results: Of the group of 28 patients, 24 (85.7%) were male and 4 (14.3%) female, with the age range between 11-76 (mean 48.2) years. Most injuries were a result of repair and maintenance work in 35.7%, wood chopping in 25%, machine use in 17.9%, simple instruments use in 10.7%, fall from one level to another in 7.1%, and cow butting with a horn in 3.6%. Eighteen eyes (64%) were blind with visual acuity less than 0.05 at their most recent review. Conclusions: Our study has shown that perforating ocular injuries in rural environment are still a big therapeutic, social and economic problem.
The incidence rate of the infected and complex wound is established at approximately 40 000/1 million of the world’s adult population. The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of three novel types of wound dressings comprising sodium chloride, metatitanic acid and silicon dioxide nanoparticles. The study design was to prove their antimicrobial properties against the microorganisms most commonly causing wound infections. The study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of tested dressings on referenced strains of bacteria (ATCC collection, Argenta, Poland) and strains of fungi species (our own collection of fungi cultured from patients). The dressings were tested with both bacterial and fungal strains on solid media (Mueller-Hinton, Sobouraud, bioMerieux, France) in the standard method. The results confirmed the inhibition of growth of bacteria and revealed zones of inhibition for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. Significant zones of inhibition were established for Staphylococcus aureus and for fungi species of the Candida sp. These results would be crucial due to the fact of the low availability of antifungal therapeutics for both systemic and topical usage. Moreover, the current standard of antifungal treatment is associated with high costs and high toxicity in general. The preliminary results are very promising but further studies are necessary. Based on the obtained results, the tested dressings may contribute to the development of the surgical armamentarium of complex wound management in the near future.
