The open-cast mine “Böhlen”, closed in 1921, in 1969 was transformed into “Zwenkau”(“Zw”) open-cast mine. In the seventies, together with its smaller neighbouring mine “Cospuden”(“Cs”), became one of the greatest enterprises of the Central German lignite mining area. In the last centuries Zw and Cs mines had an significant influence on the economic, technical and scientific progress of this region. Although the mines were in separate mining areas, very close relations of proximity existed between them, particularly in the superposition of the lowering ground water areas. Thus, the total mass of the mine tailings “Cospuden” in the mining sector “Zwenkau” was flattened and designed for land reclamation. Since the cessation of lignite mining in the area Böhlen/Zwenkau/Cospuden the south region from Leipzig has been changed fundamentally. The remaining holes, which mines left behind, became lakes. Along the lakes raised beaches, ports and holiday houses. Lusatia and Central German Mining Administration Company (LMBV), which is now responsible for the reclamation and rehabilitation of disused mines, proposed a new perspective of this region, perceived as a part of nature and human-being. The main emphasis has been placed on the development of created lakes, flow-up phase and good water quality assurance. Some of the new lakes are connected together with artifi cial canals and locks. This also relates to “Zwenkau-Cospuden Lakes” (LMBV 2009). In this article the methods of management former mining areas in the South from Leipzig, with the great accent put on the linkage of “Lakes Zwenkau-Cospuden”, are described. Necessary test on the soil samples from this field are explained. Finally, the influence of the restoration of the area on the development of the region is shown.

On the basis of the data in the literature the authors discuss toxoplasmosis of cats. Next they describe the attempt to infect 4 cats with toxoplasmosis. The cats No. 1and 2 were infected subcutaneously with the strain MC - 12 (about 15 millions of toxoplasmas), the cat No. 3 was kept without infection from the cats No. 1 and 2, but the cat No. 4 was infected with the strain RH (about 15 millions of toxoplasmas) intraperitoneally. Clinical symptoms were observed only in the cats No. 1and 2, after 2 to 3 days they became saddened, lost appetite and became dull. In the cat No. 1 these symptoms retreated after 5 days, and the cat No. 2 died on the 8th day following the infection. Postmortem examinations revealed catarrhal inflammation of the lungs and alimentary tract. Biological tests (passages on mice) revealed the presence of the toxoplasmas. Serological tests in all the examined cats gave negative results.
Strain and fi ltration parameters of lacustrine chalk from Mazury District. In this paper the strain and fi ltration parameters of lacustrine chalk from Mazury District are presented. To determinate the main engineers’ parameters the oedometer tests have been obtained. There were two types of laboratory tests: IL standard one and CLR – with the constant loading. The tests were performed on lacustrine chalk from Mazury District in North East Poland. The tests results allowed to describe relationships between stain and vertical effective stress. Also the relationship between constrained modulus and vertical effective stress with the most correlated equation was proposed. The relationship between fi ltration coeffi cient and void ratio was obtained. The constitutive equation for the relationship between fi ltration coeffi cient and void ratio was proposed: k = 1,0 · 10–12 · e3,5, where: k – fi ltration parameter, e – void ratio. Strain and fi ltration parameters obtain from laboratory oedometer tests proved the nonlinear relationship between stress-strain and stress-fi ltration.

The analysis of consolidation in organic soils

63%
This paper is devoted to the specific difficulties connected to construction on problematic soils. Different type of structures like: road embankments, flood control levees, dykes and dams are often located in soft subsoil areas, which consists mainly of peat, calcareous soil with a very high content of calcium carbonate and other high plasticity organic and no organic soils. These soils can be characterized as highly deformable with low initial shear strength and an insufficient bearing capacity. Soft soils show a large deformation, both vertically and horizontally, under load. The settlements often appear very quickly and can also continue for a long time. The consolidation process consists here of two main stages: primary settlement and secondary (and tertiary) settlement (creep). It is essential to have a good quality description of physical and mechanical properties of soil before the calculation and construction stage. For calculations of each stage of settlement the different physical and mechanical parameters of problematic soil are applied. In this paper the analysis of organic soils deformation process is presented. The deformation characteristics were defined on the basis of laboratory tests results. Soil investigations were performed on peat samples taken from test site located in Olsztyn region. Laboratory test of physical properties and consolidation tests in oedometer were carried out. Based on laboratory test results the empirical relationships between stress and deformation as well as stress and time were elaborated in order to describe the primary consolidation in organic soils.

Allergometric examinations were performed in 50 dogs reacting positively with toxoplasmine. The types of the obtained reactions were: pleoergic (6.7%), homodynamic (40%), and pleoesthetic (53.3%). Its is believed that the reason for a comparatively high frequency of pleoesthesis is to be searched in breeding conditions and care of dogs. In the group of animals kept in azylum, fed on fall offs and slaughter confiscates, positive Sabin-Feldman reaction occurred in 17.9% of dogs. A similar, high percentage (18.8%) of positive serologic reactions was detected in 101 rural dogs, whereas among 153 race dogs belonging to members of Kynologic Society they were found only in 8.3%.

Dodanie elementów bender do aparatu trójosiowego znacznie ułatwiło przeprowadzanie badań prędkości rozchodzenia się fali ścinającej, a w konsekwencji – początkowego modułu ścinania.
The infl uence of loading rate on deformation of organic soil. In this review paper the changes of deformation parameters in the organic soils characteristics are presented. The main view was put on the infl uence of loading rate on presented soils. The results of soft soils used to the analysis were obtained in laboratory using oedometer tests. To describe the deformation process of organic soils two kinds of oedometer tests were held: with gradually increasing load and constant load. Both techniques show the wide range of factors determine deformations and settlements of organic subsoil, among which important are also the velocity and the value of loading rate.

Small-strain dynamic characterization of clayey soil

51%
An appropriate evaluation of dynamic soil properties is important for proper seismic response analysis and soil modelling programs. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic properties of clayey soil from Warsaw area, taking into consideration some of the selected factors affecting the shear modulus (G) and the damping ratio (D) of examined samples. A series of resonant column tests were conducted to study the effect of applied pressure and shear strain amplitude on soil stiffness and its damping properties. These parameters were reviewed, investigated and discussed. On the basis of the results obtained from these tests as well as the theoretical analysis, it can be established that confining pressure and the range of considered strain had a significant influence on the dynamic shear modulus and on the dynamic damping ratio. The impact of stress level on D is also discussed.
The shear modulus (G) is one of the key parameters for seismic ground response analysis and it can be usually determined by means of dynamic tests (DT), such as resonant column test (RCT), or cyclic static test (CST), e.g. torsional shear (TST). The RC and TS tests are widely used laboratory methods to find stiffness of soil at small to medium strain range (0.0001–0.5%). The purpose of this paper is to present the experimental results from RC and CS laboratory tests on silty-sandy clay from the western part of Warsaw, Poland. The study aims to compare the shear modulus values obtained from two different research techniques. The influence of, in particular, the applied effective pressure, associated shear strain and experimental method (i.e. loading frequency and output amplitude) on the shear modulus at small strains (Gmax) and secant shear modulus (G) are investigated and proved. Generally, the results reveal that the examined soils stiffness calculated from TS tests is lower than from RC tests.
