Costs of protecting maize against agrophages (weeds, pests and diseases) depend on intensity of their occurrence, costs of plant protection agents and their usage (including plant spraying services), as well as on a number of treatments in the growing season. When controlling the most important agrophages (weeds, Frit fly, European corn borer, cutworms, aphids) minimum costs of total control are ca. PLN 350/ha. The large intensity of their occurrence results in the costs increase to over PLN 700/ha. When a plantation is at a great risk of being attacked by the most important pest species, this results in the increase of the cost of protection to over PLN 1 000/ha. In the integrated protection of maize against agrophages, the number of chemical treatments should be reduced to the necessary minimum in favour of more pro-ecological methods for controlling their number and harmfulness.
