Field experiments with spring barley were carried out in the years 2005-2007 (at 2 sites) in soil of very good rye complex. The effect of sowing rates of 280, 310, 340 and 370 seed per 1 m2 on the yielding of Granal, Jersey and Prestige cultivars was investigated. Grain yield, yield components, protein content in grain and grain fraction > 2.5 mm were determined. A significant grain yield increase at a sowing rate of 340 seed per 1 m2 was stated. A stronger response on the increasing sowing rates were expressed by Jersey cultivar. The grain yield increase was caused by an increase of the number of ears per pot. A high sowing rate had a negative effect on the seed number per ear and a positive one on the grain fraction > 2.5 mm.
