The studies were conducted at the Experimental Fruit - Growing Station of the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Samotwór, with the aim of comparing several mutants of the cultivars ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Gala’. Two - year - old trees of ‘Galaxy’, ‘Mundial Gala’, ‘Rubinstar’, ‘Novajo’ and also of the clone ‘Jonagold E2/20’ grafted on M.9 rootstocks were planted in the spring of 2005, at a spacing of 4.0 x 2.0 m (1250 trees per hectare). The experiment was est ablished in a randomized block design in 4 replications with 3 or 4 trees per plot. The evaluation of the mutants was based on their blooming, yielding and time of the first cropping, with a special focus on the early ones. Fruit quality was assessed on th e basis of the percentage of apples of different sizes and with the area of the red blush over ¾ of their skin surface, and also on the basis of mean fruit weight. The growth of trees was compared based on the increment in the trunk’s cross - sectional area during the first five years after planting (2005 - 2009). The cultivars did not differ significantly in their mutant groups from each other in the following features: blooming, cropping, fruit quality and tree growth. The difference was connected with the nu mber of blooming trees in the first year of cropping. Many ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Rubinstar’ trees were then full of flowers in contrast to those of ‘Novajo’. Taking everything into account, it is worth recommending all the evaluated mutants for cultivation in the region of Lower Silesia, including the clone ‘Jonagold E2/20’, but with some reservation because of a smaller blush on the skin of its fruit.
