W większości krajów OECD obserwujemy zmniejszanie lub stagnację liczby studentów studiujących kierunki rolnicze. W Polsce liczba studentów kierunków rolniczych osiągnęła maksimum w 2006 roku, a następnie zaczęła się zmniejszać. Polska zajmuje 3 miejsce w świecie biorąc pod uwagę liczbę absolwentów kierunków rolniczych. W krajach rozwiniętych, jak i rozwijających się, instytucje prowadzące wyższe studia rolnicze, muszą opracować wizję kształcenia, która służy nie tylko rolnictwu, ale wszystkim którzy zamieszkują tereny wiejskie. Aby odgrywać konstruktywną rolę w rozwoju obszarów wiejskich, uniwersytety rolnicze muszą zmienić swoje programy, wprowadzić nowe zagadnienia do programów oraz zmienić metody nauki studentów i sposoby nauczania. W odróżnieniu do sytuacji w krajach rozwiniętych, w Polsce dominuje rolnicze kształcenie zawodowe. Wprowadzane reformy w szkolnictwie wyższym dają uniwersytetom rolniczym, szansę zmiany programów nauczania, w kierunku rozwoju obszarów wiejskich.

In most of the OECD countries, a decrease or stagnation of the number of students in field of agriculture is observed. In Poland, the number of students in agricultural faculties, reached the peak in 2006, and started to decrease onwards. Poland occupied the 3rd place in the world, taking into account the number of graduate students in the fields connected with agriculture. In the developed and developing countries, higher agricultural education institutions have to work out a vision of education, that serves not only agriculture but also all people who inhabit rural areas. To perform an active and constructive role in rural development, agricultural universities should adjust their programs to include new topics, as well as teaching and learning models. Unlike the situation in the developed countries, in Poland professional agricultural education dominated. The introduction of reforms to higher education will give the agricultural universities the chance of changing the programs of studies in a way contributing to the development of rural areas.
