Propositions of the main changes in the subject of the common agricultural policy were presented in the paper. Expenditures on the common agricultural policy become more and more controversial during discussions on the structure of the EU budget. One of the options telling about the renationalization of the agriculture policy was widely criticized by the new Member States which entered to the European Union in 2004 and 2007 and where agriculture remains a very important part of the national economy. While the necessity of reduction the role of customs subsidies and duties depends on negotiations with the World Trade Organization, abolition of the direct payments would be in opposition to the main objectives of the European Union such as better living standards of citizens, economic and social cohesion and solidarity between Member States.
