Polish forestry, similarly to forestries in other countries, is characterised by low profitability. The share of forestry in the creation of Poland's gross national product (GNP) amounts to about 0.3%. Transformations which took place in the Polish forestry after 1991 were of both positive and negative nature. The negative transformations comprised: depriving State Forest units of legal personality, lack of specification of sources of funding of forest protective and social functions as well as excessive centralisation of forest management, especially planning. On the other hand, positive changes in Polish forestry included: employment rationalisation by the privatisation of the economical activities of forest districts, getting rid of old and unnecessary fixed assets, adjustment of the principles of timber trade and circulation to market economy and reinstatement of social control over forest management. Privatisation of forest work services resulted in strong competition on the market of forest services and, consequently, reductions in the costs of carrying out forest work. At the moment, we are witnessing consolidation of persons and capital in forest service enterprises. One-person companies are disappearing and are replaced by growing numbers of multi-person forest service enterprises equipped in the newest equipment and devices essential for safe work in forests.
