In 2006–2009 at the research station Pawlowice belonging to WUELS investigations were carried out with winter vetch, winter rye and their mixture (vetch + rye) as a catch crops for mulch weed control in maize. Catch crops were incorporated three weeks before sowing (M – mechanical method) or destroyed by Roundup (Ch – chemical method). The effect on weed depressing by mulch was seen up to 2–3 maize leaf stage. Weed counting at tasseling showed that biological method of destroying weeds was less effective than chemical method. The date and method of destroying mulch should be improved. In the total number of weeds the proportion of rye and vetch was high and amounted to 26% (mulch of vetch) to 43% (mulch of vetch with rye).
