Current article presents an overview of diseases in which the lipoic acid (ALA) can be used as a therapeutic agent or assist the therapy. Antioxidant properties of lipoic acid determine its broad spectrum of efficiency against various diseases, in which an oxidative stress is considered to be the etiologie factor. Lipoic acid is used to prevent and treat diabetes and complications liable to occur, for example diabetic neuropathy. Furthermore, administration of lipoic acid has a good therapeutic impact on viral hepatitis and heavy metal poisoning. ALA can be also used preventively to reduce the bone mass loss in conditions such as obesity, conjunctiva and cornea injuries. Immunomodulatory influence of lipoic acid indicates the efficiency in the treatments for multiple sclerosis and asthma, including limitation of the oncological changes and decrease of the negative effects of chemotherapy. Wide range of presented beneficial uses of lipoic acid together with its excellent tolerance by the body and good bioavailability decide about ALA's growing importance among the substances with antioxidative properties associated with the therapeutical effect.
