The European Ecological Network Nature 2000 is the youngest form of area protection in Poland, and its introduction in 2004 was one of Poland's duties when entering the EU. Now, the national Nature 2000 network comprises 990 areas which make up 20% of the country's area, including 145 Special Areas of Protection of birds and 845 SAPs of habitats. The Lower Silesian Nature 2000 network comprises 88 SAPs of habitats. Insects are subject to protection in 56 areas (64% of SAPs in the region). Among the 33 national representatives of the group protected in the national Nature 2000 network (mentioned in Appendix II to the Habitats Directive), 14 are protected in Lower Silesia, including: – 2 species of dragonflies – (G EOFFROY in FOURCROY, 1758), Leucorrhinia pectoralis (CHARPENTIER , 1825); – 7 species of butterflies– Eriogaster catax (L INNAEUS, 1758), Euphydryas aurinia (ROTTEMBURG, 1775), E. (Hypodryas) maturna (L INNAEUS, 1758), Lycaena dispar (H AWORTH, 1802), L. helle (D ENIS & SCHIFFERMÜLLER , 1775), Phengaris nausithous (B ERGSTRÄSSER , 1779) and P. teleius (B ERGSTRÄSSER , 1779); – 5 species of beetles– Carabus variolosus FABRICIUS , 1787, Cerambyx cerdo L INNAEUS, 1758, Cucujus cinnaberinus (SCOPOLI, 1763), Lucanus cervus (L INNAEUS, 1758) and Osmoderma eremita s.l. (SCOPOLI, 1763). Recognition of these species as subject to protection implies the necessity to ensure conditions for their so-called favorable conservation status. This is not easy for many reasons. One of them is the quality of inventory descriptions, which influences the plans of conservation tasks that are being prepared. Another group of quite specific problems are those related to stocktaking needed for diligence reports for environmental impact assessment and natural supervision over investments. Another factor, equally important for insect protection, is the quality and nature of information flow between the Regional Directorate of Nature Protection and experts. This concerns information about presence of species and their habitats in the field (updating data, inventory results, studies) submitted by scientists (experts, naturalists), as well as their consultations of the decisions made by the Regional Directorate of Nature Protection.
