The arthropods of medical importance in Poland were investigated individually by the workers of zoological chairs of Universities, as well as medical and agricultural Institutes. The collective works were undertaken within the scientific expeditions sponsored by the Research Institutes belonging to Polish Ministry of Health and Welfare. The natural foci of tularemia, leptospirosis, brucellosis, TE, EEE viruses were studied. The investigations were carried out with the aim of getting the knowledge of fauna of parasitic arthropods, their ecology, physiology and evaluating their role in epidemiology of above mentioned diseases. Moreover same works were devoted to control measures directed against the insects injurious to human welfare and to the problem of resistance of these arthropods to the insecticides, which are in use in our country. From Polish fauna of parasitic arthropods, the mosquitoes (Culicinae), fleas (Aphaniptera) and human lice (Anoplura) have been most adequately elaborated. In our medical iiterature little attention has been paid to flies (Muscidae, Calliphoridae and others) bot flies (Tachinidae) as well as to the problem of myiosis closely connected with these groups. Summing up our achievements in the period of twenty years, it should be stated that the most important arthropod groups of medical significance have mostly come to be known. At present it would be desirable to concentrate attention on groups less elaborated, to intensify researches into the biology, ecology, physiology as well as to initiate the study on genetics of parasitic arthropods.
