A trial to use selenium in a prophylactic of the MMA syndrom

Sows (676) at the age of 1—5 years weighing 100—200 kg divided into 7 groups were given at about 108 day of pregnancy parenterally a neutral sodium selenite at doses from 0.04 to 0.28 mg of Se/kg b.w. For the studies 7 control groups of sows of a similar tern of partirition were incuded. A significat decrease of the MMA frequency was noted in group IV (0.11—0.23 mg of Se/kg b.w.) in which the MMA syndrom was diagnosed in 30.0% of animals in comparison to a control group. Similar effects were noted in group VII (0.14—0.28 mg of Se/kg b.w.) in which the MMA syndrom was diagnosed in 56.2% of animals in comparison to a control group.
