Nurses (N=673) completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of worksettings, evaluation of their hospitals’ progress on key issues, and job burnout. Relationships among these elements were assessed in reference to the Areas of Worklife Model of burnout that defines burnout in reference to workload, control, rewards, community, fairness, and values at work. The analysis considered the extent to which congruence of organizational and personal values served a mediating role between other worklife areas with burnout. The analysis found mixed support for another key mediating relationship: the role of the three aspects of burnout in mediating relationships of worklife issues with change evaluation. Employees’ evaluation of fairness at work was related to change evaluation beyond the relationship mediate through burnout. The implication of these findings for developing a model of burnout are considered.
