Unemployment has become a very serious problem for the fledgling market economy in Poland, and the situation in rural areas is especially difficult. In 1999, Świętokrzyskie voivodship had about 107 500 unemployed (or 4,6% of the national total). The average unemployment rate is 15%, but the rate is at present very high in the north of the province, while being below average in the south. The share of unemployed pe>ple living in the countryside is 63%. As unemployed people usually have elementary education only, this stands in the way of their obtaining new places of employment. The most important reasons for losing a job were in turn: mass redundancies (81,5% of the total), as well as problems in work and life or the salary. Unemployed people over 35 are especially interested in finding new employrrent. because they usually provide for families. The urgent need in rural areas at present is thus the creation of new jobs away from agriculture. Experience shows that the development of private initiative can stimulate people into activity, and important role here is that of the development of rural touism and agrotourism, since this can indeed offset unemployment and bring about an evolution of rural areas in Świętokrzyskie province.
