Detection of diethylstilboestrol residues in poultry meat by the uterine test

The biological uterine test was used for the detection of diethylstilboestrol (DES) in poultry meat. The investigations were carried out on 95 sexually unmatured 21-day white mice females. The mice were fed for 7 days fodder made up, in equal amounts, of poultry meat containing known amounts of DES and standard granulated fodder. Next the animals were weighed, sacrificed with chloroform, the uterus was prepared and weighed. The coefficient U, being the indicator of the DES content in the tested sample, was calculated from the ratio of the weight of the uterus and the whole body of the experimental mice. This method allowed the detection of 5 ppb of DES in poultry meat.
