Inflammation is a fast defense response to any danger factor encountered by a cell. Its function is to eliminate foreign material or damaged cells and to help to restore the homeostasis. Aging causes decreased functionality of adaptive but increased reactivity of innate immune system. Age-related senescence also deteriorates cellular housekeeping processes, such as autophagic capacity. Chronic low-grade inflammation accompanied by age-related changes has been termed as inflammaging. Elevated pro-inflammatory status in association with genetic susceptibility contributes to the pathogenesis of age-related disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD).
