Permakultura to system projektowania i działania zgodny z zasadą troski o środowisko, ludzi i dzielenia się nadmiarem z innymi, propagujący bioróżnorodność i trwałość ekosystemu i gospodarki rolniczej. Zasady permakultury mają zastosowanie w budowaniu domów energoooszczędnych i tworzeniu grup społecznych. Permakultura jest jedną z teorii i praktyk ekologicznych, które stawiają sobie za cel dogłębne poznawanie natury i stosowanie panujących w niej procesów jako wzorców w szerokiej praktyce. Główne zasady permakultury opracował i opublikował Bill Mollison, a wyjaśnił i opisał szczegółowo David Holmgren. Przykładem funkcjonującej permakultury górskiej jest gospodarstwo Seppa i Andreasa Holzera w Austrii

Permaculture is a system of designing and acting in accordance with the principles of care for the Earth, the people and sharing the surplus, promoting biodiversity and sustainability of ecosystems and agriculture. The rules of permaculture apply to building energy efficient houses and creating social groups. It is an ecological theory that aims to understand nature in depth and apply its processes as patterns in practice. The main points of permaculture were developed and published by Bill Mollison and explained and described in detail by David Holmgren. An example of a functioning mountain permaculture farm is the Sepp and Andreas Holzer's farm in Austria
