The first issue of ‘Sylwan’, the world’s oldest forest scientific journal and the press organ of the Polish Forest Society, was published in 1820. The main goal of its founders was, as it is today, to promote forest knowledge among employees of every tier of forest administration, as well as among academia and students interested in forestry. In the last 30 years, ‘Sylwan’ has become a modern, peer−reviewed journal presenting results of research in forest sciences. It is published monthly in Polish, with abstracts in English, in edition of 1,200 copies. Since 1997, the journal has its Internet website. In 2007 ‘Sylwan’ was enrolled on the Journal Citation Reports. The journal’s current impact factor amounts to 0.624. The papers are available online and their search is facilitated due to the DOI system applied to the journal. The periodical serves to promote research achievements of all forest sciences including five interdisciplinary ones: silviculture, forest protection, forest management, forest use and forestry economics. The research results of the basic sciences in forestry are also presented: selection of forest trees, forest botany, phytosociology, physiology of woody plants, phytopathology, entomology, zoology, ecology, studies on the growth of trees and stands, climatology, hydrology. ‘Sylwan’ also contains papers related to forest policy and papers by foreign authors translated into Polish.
