The problem of rabies in Poland, like in other countries of Europe, concerns wild animals especially foxes. They constitute 65 per cent of all cases of the disease. The occurrence of rabies from 1945 to 1987 in Poland was the subject of analysis. The data have indicated that the problem of rabies appeared in 1957 in the Opole, Zielona Góra, Olsztyn and Koszalin regions. In 1962 the disease was already noted in all regions of the country. The highest number of rabies in foxes was recorded in 1975 (1176 cases) and 1987 (1209 cases). In the last ten years (1978—1987) rabies occurred persistently in the western parts of Poland, hence it would be reasonable to undertake the action of immunisation of foxes. The author emphasizes that the number of wild foxes is high enough in all districts of Poland with the exception of the Piotrków region, and that is why the disease can spread easily.
