The article presents some aspects of the culture Tzeltal-Tzotzil of the Chiapas Highlands and the way it manifests itself in the conformation and use of the regional space. One of its more visible features is the toltec principle of duality, according to which the dual deity manifests its presence in all the objects, natural phenomena, in the mesoamerican nations' concepts of the world and of life. The catholic believes brought by missionaries were integrated into the logic of the principle of duality, in the way that the old Mayan believs system adopted some elements of Spanish culture, analyzing them according to its own vision of the world, fulfilling the requirements imposed by the colonial govemment. From that moment on, the Indian culture analyzed here undergoes the constant process of adaptation in which all the elements coming from non-Indian society (sociedad ladina) are being integrated or interpreted according to the dual logic giving as a result the cultural complex transposed in the conformation of the society and space. It also works as an element of the strategy of social reproduction - and because of tha t, the vision of the society and the culture of the Tzeltal-Tzotzil maintains its vitality in the conditions of the changing social development process.
