Electrocardiographic examination of cows starting topasture in spring

In springs 1972 and 1973, in one herd 69 Friesian-Holstein dairy cows were examined electrocardiographically before the beginnining of spring grazing and after 3 and 10 days of pasturing. Most cows displayed an acceleration of the sinus rhythm and increase of the contraction index after 10 days of grazing. After 3 days of grazing, ECG picture showed negative alterations of the T wave in same cows and positive alterations in the others. After 10 days of pasturing the number of the cows with negative ECG changes was reduced and that with positive changes augmented. Also, same differences dealing with the oestrus cycle of the cows were noted. The results obtained may by a contribution to an electrocardiographic characteristics of a cow herd, concerning the feeding, management, physiological status of animals, and environmental conditions.
