This works develops the issue of the influence on the activity of certain enzymes of anthropogenic enriching of garden soils with heavy metals. The subject of research was humus horizons of soils located in 8 gardens in Upper Silesia, as well as in towns in eastern Poland. The research covered gardens located in the town centre zone, on terrain coming under strong pressure of anthropogenic factors, as well as in the town outskirts, not influenced directly by anthropogenic influence. The contents of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd in the soils of gardens located in the town centre zones was several times higher, and the activity of enzymes several times lower, than in the soils located in the outskirts. There was found to be a negative correlation between the contents of Zn, Pb and Cu in the soils and the activity of dehydrogenases and phosphatases. In the case of Cadmium, the regularity was not found.
