The present research was based on a strict field experiment carried out over 2005–2007 at the Experiment Station at Wierzchucinek (53°26΄ N, 17°79΄ E) of the Faculty of Agriculture, of the University of Technology and Life Sciences. Due to a growing deficit of sulphur in Polish soils, research has been launched to determine the effect of varied forms and doses of this nutrient on the content nitrogen, sulphur total and sulphate (VI) in Elf cultivar narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.). The two-factor field experiment carried out in crop rotation with narrow-leafed lupin in light soil (good rye complex, soil valuation class IIIb) on Haplic Luvisol of low richness in sulphate (VI). The experiment was set up with split-plot, involved of sulphur elemental (Siarkol Extra 80 WP) and ionic forms (Na₂SO₄). The nutrient was supplied at the following doses: 0, 20, 40, 60 kg·ha⁻¹. The research has demonstrated that in the narrow-leafed lupin leaves sampled at the beginning of the flowering stage, the total content of sulphur, its sulphate (VI) form, as well as the value of the ratios of S-SO₄²⁻ to S total and N to S were more determined by the sulphur rate than its form. The application of each of the rates of that nutrient (20, 40 and 60 kg S·ha⁻¹) significantly increased the content of total and sulphate (VI) in leaves, as compared with the control. The ionic form of the fertiliser, in general, showed a significantly more favourable effect, than the elementary form, on the content of total and sulphate (VI) sulphur in lupin leaves. The sulphur application resulted in broadening the quantitative ratio of sulphate sulphur (VI) to its total form in lupin leaves, as compared with the non-fertilised object, while the ratio of the content of nitrogen to sulphur (N to S) for the successive rates studied was narrowing. It seems that the N to S ratio is the most credible measure of the supply of plants with sulphur than the other indicators (Stot, S-SO₄²⁻, S-SO₄²⁻:Stot).
