Since more than 40 years the primary method of weed control in small grains is the use of herbicides. During this period the assortment of active substances recommended for use has enriched and the formulations of herbicides have been improved. In recent years more and more is emphasized on negative consequences of the use of herbicides, despite of significant progress made in reducing them. Modern herbicides have a low toxicity for mammals and a relatively short period of decomposition in the soil and are used at low doses. However it is necessary to take further steps to minimize interference with the natural environment. Therefore it is appropriate to develop systems for precision application of herbicides based on advanced technology, using computer programs for decision support. Weed control should be focused primarily on the weeds of greatest potential hazard to the crops, and their control methods are helpful and not chemical and preventive action. Proper recognition of the threat of weeds and application of different methods, with minimal interference in the natural environment is the essence of integrated weed control systems.
