In Collection of Plant Pathogens in Poznań an attempt to freeze wheat sori with teliospores of Tilletia caries (DC.) Tul. in liquid nitrogen was carried out. This fungus almost never develops teliospores on synthetic media. In the experiment, winter wheat sori containing teliospores of T. caries were frozen to –196°C. After 5 months of storage in liquid nitrogen, wheat seeds were inoculated with the teliospores. For all experimental objects (except control object) common bunt was observed. Therefore, this method can be used to preserve T. caries but it requires modification, particularly with focus on the freezing rate and the presence of cryoprotectant.
