The article discusses demographic processes that either stimulate or restrain transformation. Excessive emigration from the East of Poland has led to depopulation followed by depression. The article presents the demographic diversification of the above area in terms of structure, as well as in regard to different factors and the results of emigration. Chances for increased activity in the region centre around ecodevelopment and cross-border cooperation. An economic balance can be reached through an effective management of resources capable of reversing depressive tendencies.
