Opracowanie zawiera analizę stanu produkcji owoców i warzyw w woj. małopolskim, typowym dla terenów podgórskich. Wskazano na kierunki i możliwości rozwoju produkcji owoców i warzyw w terenach podgórskich.

Mountain-foot fruit growing is best represented in Małopolska province. The area of arable land makes 882.3 thousand hectares in which fruit-growing makes 22.7 thousand hectares and market gardening 19.1 thousand tonnes (4.7 per cent). The value of fruit and vegetable production constituted 17 per cent of the overall agricultural plant production. In the years 1996 - 2000 the production of fruit was between 146 and 176 thousand tonnes (tab. I) and the production of vegetables was between 415 and 567 thousand tonnes (tab. 2). In the mentioned period both the fruit and vegetable production increased. However, the average fruit yields (7.8 tonnes per hectare) and vegetable yields (30 tonnes per hectare) are low. The quality of fruits and vegetables is low as well. But both the fruits and vegetables are safe for consumers' health. Considering favourable soil and climatic conditions and in order to meet the local demand, the fruit and vegetable production should be developed in mountain-foot regions. Such production is also more profitable compared to plant cultivation. The development is accompanied by substantial changes in production and distribution of fruits and vegetables. It is necessary to increase the yields, improve the quality of the produced fruits and vegetables and to maintain the level of their safety for consumers' health. Very modern orchards as well as plantations of berry plants and vegetables are needed. In the nearest years the level of production should increase up to 200 thousand tonnes of fruits and 600 thousand tonnes of vegetables. In the regions where the horticultural production is highly concentrated there should be founded so called centres of fruit and vegetable distribution. The role of such institutions is collecting large amounts of fruits and vegetables and then, a quick sale by, among other things, the possibility of sending large homogenous consignments. It is necessary to arrange a lot of producer groups and cooperatives which will improve the sale of fruits and vegetables. Provided that all the production and sale conditions are fulfilled, the horticultural production will be prolitable even for very small market gardens.
