Residues of polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs] in the adipose tissue of domestic animals [pigs, cattle] in the region of Warmia and Mazuria

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) content was determined in the adipose tissue of pigs and cattle in the region of Warmia and Mazuria. The animals were slaughtered in August and September 1994. PCBs were determined with gas chromatography. Their average concentration in the fat tissue of pigs was 2 µg/kg, and of cattle 5 µg/kg. In the majority of the samples collected from pigs PCB content was le ss than 8 µg/kg, while in cattle it did not exceed 12 µg/kg. The percentage of positive samples was 40% for pigs and 76% for cattle. The results point to relatively low levels of PCBs in the fat tissue of animals bred in the agricultural-tourist region of Warmia and Mazuria.
