Celem pracy było zbadanie, czy palenie tytoniu ma wpływ na stężenie witaminy C w soku żołądkowym u osób zdrowych oraz u chorych z zakażeniem Helicobacter pylori (H.p.). Stwierdzono, że u osób palących stężenie tej witaminy w soku żołądkowym było istotnie mniejsze, niż u osób niepalących. Zjawisko to obserwowano zarówno w grupie osób zdrowych, jak również w grupie chorych z zakażeniem H.p. Wyniki pracy wskazują, że być może jest to jeden z mechanizmów, poprzez który palenie tytoniu sprzyja rozwojowi raka żołądka oraz utrudnia gojenie się wrzodu trawiennego i zwiększa jego nawrotowość u chorych z zakażeniem H.p.

The purpose of the study was to find out whether tobacco smoking had an effect on vitamin C concentration in gastric juice in healthy subjects and in patients with Helicobacter pylori (H.p.) infection. It was found that in smokers the concentration of the vitamin in gastric juice was significantly lower than in non-smokers. This was observed in healthy subjects and in those with H.p. infection. These results suggest that this may be one of the mechanisms through which smoking contributes to stomach cancer and impairs the healing of peptic ulcer and also increase the recurrence rate in cases with H.p. infection
