Cattle feeding in the region of Great Poland is based on silages from maize, beet leaves and grasses as well as on hay and fodder beets. The aim of this experiment was to study optimization of cattle feeding in relation to their physiological status. Reduction of watery silages, particularly silages from sugar beet leaves, and higher share of hay in diets for dried cows yielded good results with regard to the value of colostrum and the supply of colostrum immunological proteins as well as with regard to cattle health. Relatively good results were also obtained with reference to the improvement of energy balance in cows after calving using the best roughages ad libitum with an addition of fodder beets and small amounts of fat enriched concentrates fed in a "flat-rate" system. In conditions of Great Poland, maintenance of a relatively high milk yield during grazing of the second and subsequent pasture regrowths requires additional feeding (supplementation) with forage from fields. In the adopted feeding system, it was useful to supplement Na and Mg and, to a lesser degree, Zn and Cu as well to adjust Ca and P supply to the changing needs of cows depending on their physiological status.
