Korzenie Piper methysticum pochodzące z 6 wysp Południowego Pacyfiku podzielono na 6 grup (A-F) zawierających całe korzenie, różne części korzeni, a także sproszkowane korzenie. Ogólną zawartość kawalaktonu oznaczano za pomocą IR, natomiast ogólną zawartość kawainy oznaczano za pomocą HPLC. Badane próbki korzeni Piper methysticum różniły się znacznie pod względem zawartości kawalaktonu i kawainy. Największą zawartość tych związków stwierdzono w najbardziej skrajnych korzeniach P. methysticum, najmniej zawierały je sproszkowane korzenie.

The cava roots coming from the different islands in the South Pacific, were divided into 6 categories. Category A to F contained whole roots, different root parts, as well as pulverized roots. The total content of cavalactone was determined for 6 categories through IR spectroscopy. The absolute content of cavaine as well as the relative content of the individual lactones of each cava root sample was determined through HPLC. The total content of cavalactone of the different samples differs considerably. Also the content of cavaine shows considerable differences and corresponds to the total content of cavalactone. The relative content of the individual lactones varies partly from category to category of the cava roots. In general, the pulverized Piper methysticum shows considerably lower results than the whole root, which is probably due to contamination. The peripheral parts of the root contain the highest content of cavalactone and cavaine.
