Formation of trichothecenes by Fusarium sambucinum strains during 21-day incubation on sterilized wheat kernels was monitored. Three strains, originating from Poland and USA, isolated from potato tubers with dry rot symptoms were used in the experiment. The content of trichothecenes was determined after 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 12 and 21 das by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Four trichothecenes were formed by all strains: scirpentriol, 15-monoacetoxyscirpenol (15-MAS), 4-monoacetoxyscirpenol (4-MAS) and 4,15-diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), the last being the most abundant. Characteristic for all strains was a decrease in DAS concentration between day 12 and 21 of incubation. The decrease was accompanied by an increase of 15-MAS and scirpentriol during the same period. This process indicates the possibility of DAS deacetylation to 15-MAS (and further to scirpenol) catalyzed by F. sambucinum enzymes.
