In the year 1992, 3084 cases of rabies including 535 (17.35%) in domestic animals and 2549 (82.65%) in wild animals were recorded. Among domestic animals the highest incidence of the disease was found in cattle (226 animals = 7.32%), then in cats (185 cases = 5.99%) and in dogs (115 cases = 3.72%). Single cases were noted in horses, sheep, pigs and goats: altogether 9 cases (0.29%). Among wild animals, rabies was found in 2079 foxes (67.91%), in 231 racoon dogs (7.49%), in 108 roe-deer (3.50%), in 67 martens (2.17%). Single infections occurred among badgers (25 cases), polecats (16 cases), wild boars (10 cases) and 13 among other animals. The highest incidence of rabies, i.e. 1712 (55.57%) cases was observed in 11 district of the nothern and western part of Poland. Regions rabies - free or with a limited number of cases occured in eastern and north-eastern district of Poland. Since 1985 no human case of rabies has been recorded.
