The influence of exudates released by seeds of leguminous crops: pea, vetch, yellow lupine and blue lupine and by cereal grains (spring barley, oat, wheat and triticale) that remained in close vicinity was investigated. The effect of cereal grain exudates in the substrate on leguminous crops seeds and the response of cereal grains to the exudates left in the substrate by germinating leguminous seeds were also evaluated. The experiments were done in a laboratory. The impact of exudates released by the seeds of leguminous crops and by cereal grains that remained in close vicinity was stronger than that of exudates left in the substrate. When the seeds of leguminous crops and the cereal grains were placed in the immediate vicinity their exudates were found to have a significant mutual effect. The exudates either stimulated or suppressed germination in those species, coleoptyle development in cereals and root development in cereals and leguminous crops. The response of imbibed and germinating seeds of leguminous crops to cereal grain exudates in the substrate was weaker that that of cereal grains to the exudates left in the substrate by germinating leguminous seeds.
