Na bazie prowadzonych od roku 1974 doświadczeń odmianowych zgromadzono w Katedrze Warzywnictwa Akademii Rolniczej w Poznaniu ponad 60 odmian szparaga, a także około 90 genotypów pochodzących z pojedynczych roślin, zarówno z plantacji doświadczalnych jak i produkcyjnych. Rośliny te otrzymano z nasion przez odcięcie fragmentów karp, a także dzięki mnożeniu in vitro. Odmiany i genotypy szparaga są oceniane pod względem wysokości i jakości plonu, cech morfologicznych i odporności na choroby. Stwierdzono występowanie znacznych różnic w wysokości plonów, cechach morfologicznych wypustek i pędów asymilacyjnych oraz stopniu tolerancyjności na dwie podstawowe choroby: rdzę szparagową i szarą pleśń.

More than 60 cultivars in varietal trials and 90 genotypes of single plants from experimental and commercial plantations were collected in the Department of Vegetable Crops, Agricultural University of Poznań. The genotypes were obtained from seeds, parts of crows, and by in vitro propagation. The yield and spear quality, morphological characteristics and resistance to diseases of the collected cultivars and genotypes were evaluated. The great differentiation in yields, morphological characteristics and in resistance to major stalk diseases were found among the different asparagus cultivars and genotypes.
