The article contains some remarks on the main trends of changes which will arise in agriculture and in rural economy as a result of restructuring in one of eight macroregions in Poland, namely in so called South-Eastern Macoregion. Its surface amounts to 43 thous. km2 and the number of population to almost 6 mln (in 1992) living, for the most part, in the countryside (54 p.c. of the total number of its population). A specific feature of the Macroregion is a very small size of farm units and their multi-functional character, resulting mainly from non-agricultural, jobs of rural population (the prevailing surface of farms amounts 2-5 ha), as well as from the development of touristic trade, forestry and production of handicraft articles. The author draws special attention to the factors which will restrain the restructuring processes. He points, among others, to such factors, like the lack of capital for development of technical basis of agriculture and industry of food-stuffs, the increase in both registered and disguised unemployment in the countryside, the decline of rural co-opcratives, as well as difficulties in selling the products of agriculture. The article contains also some proposals of changes which should be introduced in rural areas of the Macroregion, taking into account several types of regions characterized by specific features of agriculture and by existing functional differentiation of the countryside. The author expresses the opinion that, apart from various local conditions, the final results of the restructuring will depend upon the dynamic character of other spheres of economy which exert an influence on the agriculture and which will shape both its technical and socio-economic structure.
