The article is bassed on the results of sociological investigations performed in Nowy Sącz in May 1992. Adopted assumptions were related to the concept of social integration which distinguises various kinds of aspects, namely: cultural (comprising recognition of values and norms), normative observance of these norms), functional (concerning the functions of the town considered as a certain socio-physical integrity), communication aspect (comprising the problem of real contacts between the inhabitants) and finally, the aspect of the emotional attitude towards the town, its physical features and towards other inhabitants. The investigations were performed for planning purposes and therefore, special attention was paid to the physical aspect, i.e. local conditions and practical conclusions to be drawn from them. However, as a result of ivestigations, some statements were obtained which went beyond the limits of local dimension. The article presents a part of these statements. They concern, among other things, recongnition of general values (orientation of life) and such norms which create the social role of an inhabitant of town and, next, approval of the mechanism of social control and attitude towards the town and its other inhabitants. Besides, upon the backround of statistical calculations, mutual relations were established between the indices of various spheres of integration, as well as the factors of essential influence on their level. As a result, the measures of the integration level in its various aspects proved to be mutually related, which means that the degree of integration with the town and with its inhabitants is of complex character, comprising simultaneously a high degree of its particular dimensions, and inversely - together with a low level of integration with other ihabitants and with their world of values and norms, there is a lack of emotional links with a town considered as a socio-psyhical integrity accompanied by the passivity and reluctance to participate in social life and in any other actions in the place of residence.
