The findings of many epidemiological and clinical studies indicate that consumption of a diet rich in phytoestrogens can exert the cardioprotective, anti-osteoporotic and other beneficial effects of the estrogens used in hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women without adversely affecting the risk of thrombosis and the incidence of breast and uterine cancers. The recent results from The Women's Health Initiative and One Million Women Study, which assess the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), demonstrate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer among postmenopausal women. As a result, there is an increasing interest in the use of alternative therapies for menopause symptoms. One of these alternatives are phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens represent a family of plant compounds that have been shown to have both estrogenic and antiestrogenic properties. This article reviews the evidence for the potential of phytoestrogens, either in dietary or supplemental form, to replace traditional forms of HRT.
