The study describes the shedding of a virus in the semen of a stallion persistently infected with equine arteritis virus (EAV) within 5 years in relation to the titer of specific antibodies and testosterone concentration. Between November 2002 and August 2005, the virus was shed continuously. During that time the titer of specific antibodies maintained on the same level (VN titer 128) and testosterone concentration ranged from 850.9 ng/L to 669.5 ng/L. No virus was detected in the semen both by inoculation of cell culture and RT-PCR one month later. The absence of EAV in the semen was found when the concentration of testosterone in the stallion's blood clearly decreased. In the next months, the concentration of testosterone returned to the normal level and shedding of the virus was observed again.
