Trade in embryos collected from sheep, goats, sows and horses is relatively rare on the international market. However, over the past year some swine and sheep embryos have been imported to Poland. This paper presents new data regarding the risk of transmitting different pathogens through embryo-transfer. It discusses the possibility of transmitting scarpie, Brucella ovis infection and blue tongue diseases in sheep. Foot and mouth disease, pseudo-rabies, swine vesicular diseases virus, African swine fever virus and porcine parvovirus which attaches itself strongly to the porcine zona pellucida are of particular significance in the case of sows. The very limited number of embryos available hampers equine embryotransfer experiments. The article also refers to the further risk of disease transmission by in-vitro manipulated embryos.
