Exercise-inducted pulmonary hemorrhage is commonly observed in horses during intense exercise. The hemorrhage originates from the pulmonary capilaries, and through an ascending route appears in upper airways. Currently bronchoscopy is the only diagnostic tool to recognize EIPH, and bronchoalveolar lavage is a method of semi-quantifying the severity of EIPH. Furosemid is administered to prevent or limit the severity of the hemorrhage. Future investigations are needed to explain the pathophysiology and to describe whether the condition is physiological or pathophysiological.
