The aim of the study was to determine REE and DIT in a group of overweight and obese children aged 11-13 years in the year 1998 at the Section of Dietary Counselling, Department of Dietetics and Functional Foods, Warsaw Agricultural University. The study included: analyse 3-day food records of investigated subjects before and after dietary counselling, analyse nutritional status of subjects before and during the application of low-calorie diet with energy value of 1400-1500 kcal. The study was carried out in a group of 25 overweight and obese children aged 11-13 years old, who were referred by their parents to the Section of Dietary Counselling during the period between March and July 1998. Time interval between the 1st and 2nd visit was at least 6 weeks. Subjects were stratified by gender, girls and boys. Measurements of body mas and height (for computing BMI), body composition analysis and determination of REE and DIT (indirect calorime- try method) were performed during 2 subsequent visits. REE was significantly higher after 6 weeks of dietary counselling (1386.71 vs 1539.20, P = 0.0002). The increase in REE might have been brought about by a rise in physical activity (PA) observed in patients after receiving advice about the significance of PA and lifestyle style chgnes in reducing body weight. This is very important, since REE accounts for 65-75% of total energy expenditure. The increase of REE might have been brought about by an increase in protein intake. It has been estimated that DIT of high proein diets can be even 25%. The magnitude of DIT in all subjects was lower after 6 weeks of the application of low- -calorie diet - 170.41 ± 114.32 vs 122.56 ± 82.51, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.09). The fall in DIT was probably due the decrease of the intake of energy found in the obese children. A moderately strong correlation was found between body and REE, both before and after dietary intervention with low-calorie diet.
