An important although still underestimated way of reducing water contamination with nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and atmosphere pollution with ammonia and nitrogen oxide is the reduction of the content of these compounds in animal excreta. There are a number of ways of lowering the level of these compounds in excreta. One of them is the application of certain feed additives which improve feed utilization (enzymes, growth stimulators etc.) and also enable better balancing of diets. Another possibility is to apply a phase feeding system. In ruminants the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus losses in excreta, can be achieved by improving feed digestibility and energy value of roughages as well as increasing the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis.
