Paper presents the earlier and current records connected with the incidence, severity of symptoms and detection methods of several virus and virus-like diseases of rose plants. On the basis of reviewed literature it was stated that rose plants currently reproduced in European greenhouses are relatively virus-free, however the virus-like diseases of uncertain actiology create a significant economic problem. The most recent Polish investigations indicated that the occurrence of virus-like diseases is associated with phytoplasma infection. Detection of phytoplasma infection in naturally infected rose plants was possible when sensitive molecular methods were applied owing to uneven distribution and very low phytoplasma titre.
